Sheriff Dagostino- A Legacy of Service and Leadership
Since taking office in 2010, Sheriff Dagostino has been dedicated to enhancing public safety, modernizing law enforcement operations, and fostering strong community partnerships. Under his leadership, the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office has achieved numerous milestones that have strengthened its ability to protect and serve residents effectively.
One of Sheriff Dagostino’s most impactful initiatives was the creation of the Street Crimes Task Force, a specialized unit designed to combat drug-related offenses, violent crime, and illegal firearms. This task force has significantly improved the crime prevention efforts by fostering collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies.
Recognizing the invaluable role of highly trained police dogs in law enforcement, Sheriff Dagostino expanded the K-9 program started by his predecessor Sheriff Buffardi. Equipping the department with skilled K-9 units for drug and bomb detection, search and rescue and suspect apprehension.
To ensure more comprehensive investigations, he created an Investigations Unit allowing detectives to focus on complex criminal cases, from homicides to financial crimes. This unit has led to a higher case resolution rate and improved justice for victims.
Sheriff Dagostino has also prioritized protecting the county’s waterways by launching the Marine Patrol Unit, which ensures the safety of boaters, enforces waterway laws, and responds to emergencies on the local lakes and rivers.
In addition to these initiatives, Sheriff Dagostino has developed an Accident Reconstruction Team, providing expert analysis of serious and fatal crashes to improve roadway safety and aid in investigations.
He formed an ATV Unit to improve law enforcement presence in off-road and rural areas and launched a Drone Program to assist with search and rescue, accident reconstruction and tactical operations.
He also created a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, ensuring that large trucks and commercial vehicles meet safety standards to prevent accidents.
Sheriff Dagostino oversaw the construction of a new substation in Princetown to enhance emergency response and safety in the western part of the county.
Committed to school safety, Sheriff Dagostino established the School Resource Officer (SRO)
Program, placing trained deputies in Schenectady County Community College and Duanesburg Middle/High School to build positive relationships with students while maintaining a secure learning environment.
A commitment to professionalism and excellence has been at the forefront of his tenure. Under his leadership, the Correction, Civil and Patrol Divisions have all been accredited by the New York State Sheriff’s Association, meeting the highest standards in law enforcement operations, training, and accountability.
